Hi,

We are going to order an Explorer EV Premium AWD 79 kWh Extended Range in the new year, with 21” alloys.

We currently drive a PHEV Range Rover Sport with an EV range of around 25 miles (on a good day!)

The 20/30 mile range has served us well, we do mostly short trips but are now ready to go for a fully electric car.

My question is regarding the heat pump. Given the low mileage, short trips we do, is there any point in us opting for the Heat Pump?

We will charge overnight at 7p per kW.

I note that the Explorer does not have heated windscreens or heated steering wheel and so wondered if the heat pump did a better job in heating the car up on a cold morning? Or is it just a more efficient way of doing it? I’m not even sure how the heat pump works tbh!

Any info or feedback on the heat pump would appreciated!

Thanks.

Ali

Hi,
I’ve never owned a Range Rover but think you are making a great choice. I swapped from a Tesla to the Explorer and am loving my new Ford. I’m sure you’ll love a full EV.
I went for the Premium RWD version with the heat pump. I believe the heat pump will improve the car’s efficiency, especially in the winter so hope the range won’t drop off too much when the ambient temperature drops.
Also, good news! All Explorer EV models have heated steering wheels!
Enjoy!

I ordered one as a lease car (although not actually got it yet), and basically had to get it spec'd with a heat pump - presumably to protect their residuals. If your normal usage pattern is low-ish miles and can be plugged in, I would be tempted to save the £1000.

You can pre-condition your car whilst plugged in / drawing power from the house. On a longer drive & colder weather you will lose out on some efficiency, but on short runs you'd not have enough impact to cause any sort of range anxiety, and with a home charger & 7p/kWh charging you'd be fine to get topped off for the next trip out.
